Autism Spectrum Disorder

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex developmental disorder characterized by impairments in social interaction, verbal and nonverbal communication skills, repetitive behaviors, sensory, fine and gross motor delays. Generally, the onset of symptoms of autism is prior to three years of age. Autism spectrum disorder begins in early childhood and eventually causes problems functioning in society — socially, in school and at work. Each child with ASD presents with a unique pattern of behavior and level of severity — from low functioning to high functioning.

Thus, early intervention is vital to facilitate the appropriate development in children with Autism. In 2007, the estimated prevalence of Autism Spectrum Disorder was 0.6% in North America and Europe but today it is 1.7% or 1 in 59 children (Autismspeaks.org)

Autism spectrum disorder begins in early childhood and eventually causes problems functioning in society — socially, in school and at work. Often children show symptoms of autism within the first two years of life. Each child with ASD presents with a unique pattern of behavior and level of severity — from low functioning to high functioning.

Possible Symptoms of Autism

  • Delayed speech and language development
  • Inability to cope with small changes in a daily routine
  • Avoiding eye contact
  • Limited or no interactions with peers and family members
  • Stereotypy or repetitive behaviors
  • Sensory Issues
  • Feeding Issues
  • Many other difficulties

The symptoms and their severity vary widely across the 3 core areas for each individual diagnosed with ASD (communication, social interaction, and repetitive behaviors). There are no medical tests such as blood tests that can diagnose children. The diagnosis of ASD is usually done by a Developmental Pediatrician or a Clinical Psychologist after a full diagnostic Evaluation.

Though Autism Spectrum Disorder is still considered a lifelong diagnosis, with appropriate early intervention, individuals with ASD can lead productive and fulfilling lives. It is our mission to help you understand the basics of Autism and help you navigate the complex journey for your child.
